What Is The Correct Order Of Applying Skin Care Products, and Why Does It Matter?

Applying Skin Care Products. Taking care of your skin is a form of self-love. Think of how good it feels to get a relaxing body massage after a full and busy day. Your skincare routine is like that, too – you pamper your skin with the products you trust to look and feel great.

But nailing the right beauty and skincare products is just one part of the equation. The other part goes to putting those products in the right order.

Why do you have to follow the right order in applying your skin care products?

There’s a good reason why you should be applying your toner first and moisturising next, and not just randomly grab and skincare product and put it on your face.

Following the right order of skincare applications ensure that you get the most efficacy from your products and achieve maximum results. Ask your skin and beauty specialist, and they’d most likely tell you that the order of using skincare makes a lot of sense if you are going to consider the consistency of the products, their ingredients, and potential side effects if you don’t follow the proper steps.

Also, your skincare routine looks slightly different in the morning than in the evening. There are products you definitely must use and some that you can skip, depending on the circumstances.

Rules in applying skin care products

Layering is an important concept you must learn when it comes to skincare. How you layer your products during your routine allows your skin to get as many benefits as possible. Now, here are the rules when applying skincare:

  • Start from the lightest to the thickest. Products with lighter consistency are more easily absorbed by the skin than those with a thicker consistency. Therefore, you must layer your products from liquid to cream.
  • Think of the ingredients and what they do. Products with hyaluronic acid must be applied while the skin is a little damp to keep the skin hydrated. Meanwhile, retinoids must be applied on dry skin to prevent irritation.
  • Consider the amount of the product. In skincare, less is more (unless it’s sunscreen). Most products are already very concentrated and can deliver their benefits even if you use only a small amount. Retinoids and exfoliating products should only be used minimally to prevent harsh side effects.

Proper order of applying skin care products

Step 1: Cleanser (morning and evening)

This step clears out the dirt, grime, and debris from your skin to ensure the penetration of the succeeding products. In the evening, make it s point to use a cleanser, especially if you have worn sunscreen and makeup all day.

Step 2: Toner (morning and evening)

Some people skip toners altogether, and that is fine. But toners nowadays are alcohol-free, so they’re fantastic even if you have sensitive skin. Some toners also target specific issues, such as oiliness, acne, and wrinkles.

Step 3: Serums and Essences (morning and evening)

These come next because they are lighter than your typical moisturiser and contain active ingredients that help with specific skin troubles. Dermal Transfer Serum, for instance, contains Vitamin C, which helps combat skin wrinkles, discolouration, and hyperpigmentation. It’s especially good to use serums when using retinoids and anti-ageing skincare products because serums also help keep your skin hydrated.

Step 4: Eye Cream (morning and evening)

Eye cream is a separate product from a facial moisturiser because it is lighter and serves a more specific purpose than just moisturisation – anti-aging. Eye cream helps reduce the appearance of dark circles, puffiness, and an overall aged look around the eyes.

Step 5: Retinoids (evening)

Retinoids and retinol are Vitamin A derivatives that help in anti-aging. Since these products are oxidised in the sun, it is best to apply them at night. You may experience skin sensitivity upon initial use of retinoids, so it’s good to apply moisturiser 10 minutes before and after.

Step 6: Moisturiser (morning and evening)

A good moisturiser like the ADEC Vitamin Facial Moisturiser is packed with antioxidants that provide extra hydration to keep your skin looking healthy. Moisturisers also trap the previous products, allowing them to penetrate and become more effective.

Step 7: Sunscreen (morning)

Use sunscreen to cap off your daytime skincare routine. Sunscreen protects your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays that cause discolourations, sun spots, wrinkles, and, worse, skin cancer. For most beauty experts, sunscreen is a non-negotiable in the AM routine.
